A tool that is used to measure volts, amps and ohms is called a digital multimeter. These tools are not the same as analog meters, which have needles and gauges. When selecting a digital multimeter, a very important specification to consider is the unit’s operating resistance, commonly known as impedance. Many multimeters are made having an automatic range feature, that will automatically set the appropriate range for the individual circuit that is being tested. Basically, all the operator needs to do is to set the multimeter to the correct current being tested, then the digital multimeter will do the rest.

Generally, the current limit will be printed on the front of the unit. A standard limit is usually ten amps. Which means that when the multimeter is connected to a current of twelve amps, the interior fuse will automatically pop to avoid damaging the unit. The installation of a larger fuse is not going to raise the limit of the unit and could cause the unit to quit working.
